Ghulaam

Ghulaam is a 54-card deck inspired by the art, history, and living culture of Lucknow. Built around the idea of the “ghulaam” as a bridge, the deck explores how a city expresses itself through its people—its artisans, performers, rulers, and storytellers. Each card becomes a passage into Awadhi culture. The Kings represent the Nawabs of Awadh, the Queens the Begums who shaped its legacy, and the Jacks the craftsmen and artists who carried its spirit forward. The Jokers step outside hierarchy, reflecting the humor and street culture of the city through Gulabo and Sitabo. The visual system is intentionally restrained and rooted in context. A two-tone palette of burgundy and blush draws from Awadhi architecture, while the Lucknawi arch frames every card as a symbolic gateway. Elements like the Mahi Maratib and the Husainabad Clock Tower extend the narrative across the deck, grounding it in memory, identity, and place. Every decision is built from what already exists within the language of Lucknow—nothing added, only interpreted. The result is a deck that feels both archival and contemporary, structured yet expressive. Ghulaam isn’t just a set of cards. It’s a system of storytelling—where culture, hierarchy, and everyday life come together, one hand at a time.
